For some people, cross-cultural experiences can be meaningful and enriching; for others they can be distressing and painful. People can either continue to work through ethnically and culturally diverse relations or they can retreat into ones that reflect familiarity and homogeneity. The former may be what people aspire to have, but the latter is perhaps the reality and easier option requiring less effort to get along with others.
